The Cartoon in Three Steps

Sketch
- Kevin begins by hand-drawing the concept in a Canson One Art Book sketchbook, creating a detailed pencil sketch that forms the foundation of the cartoon.
Ink
- Using a traditional light box, he carefully traces the pencil sketch with pen ink onto A4 paper, producing a crisp, original inked artwork.
Colour
- Finally, the inked artwork is digitally coloured in Adobe Photoshop using a Wacom Intuos tablet and pen, with a technique called “flatting” to bring the final cartoon vividly to life.
About the Alfred Hitchcock Day Cartoon
Here are Kevin’s insights into the final Alfred Hitchcock Day cartoon — exploring how he brought it to life through drawing, colour, and visual references.
Inspiration for the Cartoon
“How to create a cartoon that befits a legendary film maker?
I wanted to include elements from Alfred Hitchcock’s famous films, namely Vertigo, Psycho, North by Northwest and The Birds. And this lead me to spend more time than I planned to on creating this cartoon, primarily on researching and drawing to get things right.
There are so many iconic elements and scenes. Combining them together was the biggest challenge in order to honour him and his life’s work.
I loved his iconic silhouette and profile, so I opted to centralise that, while playing on the idea of The Birds carrying him away.
Keeping the playful style of Kooky Days was difficult given his films heavily focused on intrigue, suspense, drama and murder.
To approach this, I focused on making the Bates Mansion, the knife and shower head whimsical characters that are peeping over and around a wall.
The dizzying Vertigo stairs seemed to work well with the number 2, twisting in weird way. While the number 1 became a film strip feeding a classic movie projector. The visuals were inspired from the opening title graphics created by Saul Bass.
While not a Hitchcock film or visual, the spiralling square visual in the background is taken from a poster design from the film Buried. It was said that the director Rodrigo Cortés was heavily influenced by Hitchcock when creating this film. I felt is worked well in the context of how Hitchcock’s work has influenced others, while adding to the feeling of vertigo.
Another homage was using the Batman logo in the film projection, which is a nod to Christopher Nolan who often cited Hitchcock as an important influence in his own films. Particularly in areas like suspense, visual storytelling and tension-building.
The “blood red carpet” alludes to the idea that he never won and Oscar for best director, possibly because suspense and horror were not highly respected genres by the Academy at the time, or his films were considered popular entertainment rather than prestige drama.”
