Unicorns themselves, however, have a much older history. As noted on Wikipedia, they were described by ancient Greek writers like Ctesias, who wrote about a horse-like creature with a single horn.
Over time, the unicorn became a symbol of purity and magic in European folklore.

The Cartoon in Three Steps

Sketch
- Kevin begins by hand-drawing the concept in a Canson One Art Book sketchbook, creating a detailed pencil sketch that forms the foundation of the cartoon.
Ink
- Using a traditional light box, he carefully traces the pencil sketch with pen ink onto A4 paper, producing a crisp, original inked artwork.
Colour
- Finally, the inked artwork is digitally coloured in Adobe Photoshop using a Wacom Intuos tablet and pen, with a technique called “flatting” to bring the final cartoon vividly to life.
About the Unicorn Day Cartoon

Kevin’s thoughts
Inspiration for the Cartoon
“I really went all out on the cuteness, colour and well… copyrighted characters (I wanted to pay homage to iconic cultural references through this art form, as this is what Kooky Days is all about, in order to celebrate the day) for this cartoon.
In terms of brands and iconic characters, I wanted to include recognisable characters from film and TV, namely: Moonstone and Twilight Sparkle from the My Little Pony series, the unicorn Gru won for Agnes (It’s so fluffy!) and the “papoy” unicorn the Minions made for her from Despicable Me, to Unikitty from the LEGO movie and Buttercup from Toy Story 3.
In my research, even though it’s a cliché, it seems rainbows and stars are a none negotiable requirement when it comes to any reference with unicorns. The odd magical castle floating on a cloud in the sky is another.
As with most of my cartoons, I like to include other subtle concepts or ideas that make me laugh by their small detail. For example, the hermit crab that stumbled onto the cloud with a unicorn horn shaped shell, or the unicorn horn stuck to the moon (in tribute to the recent Artemis II moon mission).
This quote from Jaime Murray ‘Be yourself. Unless you can be a unicorn. Then always be a unicorn.’ feels like it reflects the spirit of Unicorn Day and how to treat life itself, by reminding us to embrace uniqueness and imagination.”
